Giving Back to the Community – One House at a Time

InterGen employees help build home for less fortunate family

BURLINGTON, MA - When Sylvia B.* was a teenager, she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. After the baby’s father and she separated, she was determined to graduate from high school with honors, which she did. She then finished a medical assisting program at a local community college. Although she and the baby’s father reconciled and had a second child, the father left the United States, leaving Sylvia, once again, as the sole provider.

With the support of her family, over the years she overcame numerous challenges and now has her Bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in criminal justice. However, she and her daughter and son are living in a small two-bedroom apartment in a crime-ridden neighborhood near Boston. And, while she keeps her apartment immaculate, cockroaches are a constant problem in her unit and the building.

Sylvia’s story is similar to many others who, in the face of adversity, have pulled themselves up with the assistance of Habitat for Humanity. For more than 25 years, the non-profit organization has helped local and global families live in safe, affordable homes. Habitat is committed to building homes for families who have a need and are willing to work hard.

InterGen employees in Burlington have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell for the past four years. A group recently spent the day hammering, drilling, sawing, and hauling wood to build Sylvia and her children’s new home in Westford, MA.

“Community isn’t just a core value at InterGen, it’s a way of life,” said InterGen’s Vice President of Human Resources Nick Thurlow. “For us, building houses for Habitat offers our employees a chance to give back to our neighbors. We also benefit from the teamwork when coworkers collaborate to raise a roof or frame a wall.”

Sylvia said, “Thanks to Habitat for Humanity this dream will soon become a reality. Being selected as a partner family is a blessing and my family and I are deeply grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to playing with the kids in the yard, celebrating holidays at home and meeting my new neighbors!”
