Spalding Energy Expansion
Adjacent to its existing gas fired CCGT in Spalding, InterGen is currently constructing an open cycle gas plant of approximately 300MW, scheduled to commence commercial operations in the summer of 2019. In addition, InterGen is planning to expand the site to include up to 175MW of battery storage and build a CCGT of up to 470MW.
InterGen received its Section 36 planning consent for the project from the Department of Energy and Climate Change in November 2010 and its latest revised consent in January 2018. The expansion project is carbon capture ready.
Clean-burning natural gas will be the fuel for the new gas plants and modern equipment and technology will be employed to control emissions, which will largely consist of water vapor and carbon dioxide. Gas-fired power stations do not emit odors from their processes and all aspects of the environmental performance will be monitored by the relevant authorities (including the Environment Agency).
The battery project will likely utilise proven lithium-ion technology and will not emit any gaseous emissions.
