Rijnmond
Operations
InterGen’s natural gas-fired, combined-cycle Rijnmond Energie project, located in the Rotterdam Port Area, achieved commercial operations in June of 2004. The 820 MW plant supplies much-needed clean, low-cost electricity to the Netherlands and northwest Europe. The project also supplies steam to the Argos tank terminal and to Dutch Biodiesel, both located adjacent to the power facility. One of the cleanest and most efficient power facilities in Europe, Rijnmond represents a significant milestone in Europe's independent power development.
Performance
The baseload efficiency of the plant is between 50% and 51% and the plant has duct firing technology for additional output generation.
Safety
Safety is one of the key values at the Rijnmond Energie plant for the Operations Team and is continuously monitored and improved.
Environmental
Through the use of efficient gas-fired, combined heat technology, Rijnmond Energie meets the strictest environmental standards and operates with the highest thermal efficiency of any plant in Western Europe. Before construction began, the project undertook a remediation effort to reclaim the site after decades of heavy industrial use. With the export of steam to the Argos tank terminal and to Dutch Biodiesel, Rijnmond Energie keeps improving its environmental profile and efficiency. Rijnmond uses continuous emission monitoring to assure compliance with air quality regulations.
Community
Rijnmond Energie has works closely with Dutch regulatory authorities throughout the life of the project to ensure open lines of communication with all project stakeholders, as well as to identify and provide benefits to the local area. As the plant continues to operate, the Rijnmond team remains committed to communicating with and contributing positively to the area. Rijnmond Energie upholds a close and positive relationship with the local environmental agency, the Port Authority, and regional authorities.
Management
Arjan van der Stigchel, Plant Manager for both Rijnmond Energie and Maastroom Energie, graduated as Marine Engineer and has worked for over 25 years in the power generation industry. Mr Van der Stigchel joined InterGen in 2003 during the construction and commissioning of Rijnmond Energie.
