InterGen Closes Deal with Centrica - InterGen Intending to Make an Investment in Sustainable Power Generation
InterGen announces today that it has signed a tolling agreement with Oxxio Tolling B.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Centrica plc giving Oxxio the rights to the entire output of the planned 400 MW power plant. The tolling arrangement will run for 15-20 years and Centrica will supply the gas required to fuel the plant.
InterGen intends to build the natural gas fueled power unit adjacent to its existing 800 MW facility which is owned and operated by its Rotterdam subsidiary, Rijnmond Energie C.V.. This facility is already one of the most efficient power plants in the Netherlands.
Customer benefits
Due to growing demand for electricity and the ageing of existing plants, the 400 MW gas fired power unit will provide an important contribution to the security of supply in the Netherlands. The facility is scheduled to complete by September 2009 with first output expected in 2009-2010.
InterGen continuously seeks to effectively and efficiently utilize its resources in the operation of its facilities and benefits, in particular, from its experience of successfully operating the existing Rijnmond power plant. From January 2007, InterGen will provide Argos with up to 200,000 tons of co-generated steam annually from the existing power plant. The provision of this co-generated steam enables Argos to shut down its own boilers close to the Pernis area.
Best available technology
InterGen will utilize proven and environmentally responsible technology in constructing and operating the planned facility. In addition, and in anticipation of, future air quality legislation in the Netherlands, InterGen has decided to voluntarily install SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) in the 400 MW plant. SCR is advanced technology for the control of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from power plants and is designated by most countries as the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) i.e. the best commercially available technology to control NOx emissions.
