Further Investment Proposed for Spalding Energy Facility
Edinburgh, UK, November 7, 2008 – InterGen, the owner of Spalding Energy, is proposing to expand its gas-fired power station at Spalding. The proposed £500 million project represents a substantial investment and would create an additional 900 MW of generating capacity. This would effectively double the output of the existing plant, enabling it to supply the energy needs of approximately two million homes.
The proposed expansion at Spalding demonstrates InterGen’s strong support for additional efficient thermal power generating capacity in the UK energy market. Developments of this type are essential if the UK is to meet its Climate Change objectives and forecast generation capacity requirement.
The project is in the early stages of the development process, and InterGen is committed to consulting key stakeholders and local communities on its plans. InterGen wishes to make the additional power from Spalding available as soon as possible and is engaging with both National Grid and the UK Government with a view to achieving this.
Tim Menzie, InterGen’s General Manager in the UK said, “We are very pleased to demonstrate InterGen’s commitment to increasing our generating capacity in the UK. Our proposed investment at Spalding reinforces our position as the UK’s leading independent energy generator, and will enable us to play a key role in providing vital energy supplies for the UK.”
