InterGen Files Application with DECC to Expand Spalding Energy Facility

InterGen, the owner of Spalding Energy, announced today that it has filed an application with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to expand its natural gas-fired power station at Spalding.

The proposed £500 million expansion represents a substantial investment and would provide up to 900MW of additional generating capacity. This would effectively double the output of the existing plant, enabling it to supply the energy needs of approximately two million homes. InterGen is aiming to have the new station operational by early 2014 to help address the projected electricity generation gap in the UK.

The application assesses environmental and other matters related to the proposed expansion. Over the coming months, there will be further consultation on the project including a period during which the public will be invited to comment.

Mark Somerset, InterGen’s European General Manager said, “We are very pleased to demonstrate InterGen’s commitment to increasing generating capacity in the UK. Our proposed investment at Spalding reinforces our position as a leading independent UK energy generator, and will enable us to play a key role in providing vital energy supplies for the UK for years to come.”

The proposed expansion at Spalding demonstrates InterGen’s strong support for additional modern, efficient thermal power generating capacity in the UK energy market. Developments of this type are essential if the UK is to meet its Climate Change objectives and forecast generation capacity requirement.

About InterGen in the UK:

InterGen has developed one third of the UK's new generating capacity installed in the last ten years (an investment of approximately US$2.8 billion) and owns and operates three stations in the UK: Spalding in Lincolnshire, Coryton in Essex and Rocksavage in Cheshire. These stations together provide enough power for over three million households.

InterGen is the UK’s largest independent gas-fired power producer. Its plants provide approximately 6% of the country’s average demand. InterGen’s gas-fired power plants are among the cleanest and most technologically advanced in the world.
