The key purposes of the Performance Engineer is to ensure that the Output and Thermal performance of the plant is monitored and maximised so that the site management and regional Commercial teams have all the relevant, correct and updated plant operating parameters to ensure that the commercial dispatch of the plant is optimised.

The Performance Engineer will also support the training and continuous improvement of the operations and maintenance team functions affecting plant performance and reliability through the development and use of detection and analysis tools that result in providing feedback on the effectiveness of their processes and actions.

In support of the Engineering teams, the role will also ensure that:

  • the performance and operability of any modifications are considered as part of the change management process
  • plant performance related scope is considered and evaluated during outage planning and execution
  • scoping, execution and management of projects to improve plant performance during planned outages
  • developing, utilising and promoting predictive analytics tools
  • reviewing historical trends and historian data to inform and lead improvement opportunities
  • utilising techniques such as root cause analysis, Pareto, criticality assessments and FMEA to inform decisions and focus resources.

Job Summary

Principal responsibilities are described below:

  • Work closely with the Management Team and on-site Production Team to ensure plant efficiency losses are understood, targeted and minimised
  • Monitor plant performance and operational trends, supporting investigation of any potential issues
  • Monitoring plant equipment condition to evaluate fit for purpose when undertaking performance data analysis monitoring.
  • Provide guidance and deliver training to the plant teams to enable them to optimise performance
  • Drive a programme to deliver against Company Performance KPIs, including setting, tracking and communicating performance, expectations and deliverables
  • Remain up to date on emerging technology related to plant performance, software improvements and performance monitoring
  • Assist and support the Management and Commercial teams with required analytical duties and functions
  • Be the custodian of the plant heat rate, output and degradation forecasting tool and work with the site Management and Commercial team to ensure that accurate business plan submissions are made
  • Support EMC by providing timely, accurate and useful plant operating parameters to aid commercial dispatch.
  • Regular interface with commercial team as necessary to ensure commercial drivers and opportunities are fully explored.
  • Identify plant operational enhancement opportunities and provide analysis for management decision-making.
  • Generate reports of expected benefits including capacity, heat rate and production cost improvements
  • Duties will also include the generation of testing calculations and analysis, including budget evaluation to support feasibility and cost/benefit analysis
  • Promote cultural and behavioural attitude towards integration of the use of predictive monitoring within the overall site performance and reliability strategy.
  • Support development and promote the use of predictive monitoring tools for plant operations & equipment (such as PI AF) to enhance early detection of underperformance.
  • Support the Engineering team leading up to and during outages to develop, plan, and deliver outage scopes.
  • Support regional and site based operational excellence initiatives to deliver continuous improvement in asset management processes.
  • Support the Engineering Team with Change Management, ensuring operability, performance and reliability are properly considered
  • Support the Management Team with all Compliance aspects as required
  • Provide suitable cover for Management Team or other Engineering Team members in their absence
  • Supporting the wider InterGen UK Team on an ad-hoc basis in line with business ne.

Knowledge / Experience

  • Strong data mining, analytical & visualisation skills with Excel and plant historian systems
  • Knowledge and experience of power generation process, permit and safety systems, HV switching and switchgear, steam cycle chemistry, performance monitoring, reading technical drawings, computers and computer applications
  • A minimum of 5 years power generation experience, preferably in performance monitoring and/or plant performance improvement
  • Strong quantitative background with at least 3 years’ experience in Performance Engineering and monitoring analysis
  • Experience/exposure to the Independent Power Producing Industry, oil or gas, with a good understanding and application of the Health, Safety and Environmental aspects
  • Knowledge of and ability to practically apply fluid mechanic, thermodynamic and heat transfer theory to Brayton and Rankine power cycles
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques associated with operational and equipment reliability
  • Working knowledge of Power Plants and major equipment performance and operation, and understanding of performance calculations
  • Knowledge of power plant instrumentation systems and ability to quantify effort propagation
  • Familiarity with OT systems such as OSI PI database tools, General Physics EtaPRO and GateCycle is desirable
