We are on the search for talented graduates to join our two-year Shift Trader programme within our Trading team. A Graduate Programme for Shift Traders

What You’ll Be Doing

Your first three months will be an essential period for building the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the programme. During this time, you will:

·        Discover Powertica – explore our departments, tools, collaborative teams, and the revenue centres that power our business - get a true feel for our unique culture.

·        Power Up Your Knowledge – get to grips with the energy system and power market fundamentals. Learn how we keep the lights on and the world moving!

·        Learn, Grow, Excel – take part in tailored training courses designed to boost your knowledge, skills, confidence, and career potential.

The Shift Trading Desk is responsible for trading, optimising and dispatching our 2.8GW of gas-fired power stations in the GB energy market. Working a 24/7 shift pattern, the shift trading team act in the continuous spot power and gas commodity markets and the Balancing Mechanism run by National Grid ESO to manage real time supply and demand on the electricity system. This will allow you to gain a real-life understanding of how to optimise generation assets as well as practical experience of dispatching these assets and trading in commodity markets.

In your first 4-6 months you will be immersed in the action and work closely with our experienced Shift Traders, shadowing the trading desk, learning by observing and gradually move through to supervised execution – this is hands-on, one-to-one training that allows you to progress at your own speed and designed to build your confidence and capability.

Once you're ready, you’ll step into the role of Shift Trader, taking full responsibility for trading, pricing, and dispatching our physical assets. You’ll be supported by a collaborative team of traders and analysts, with guidance from the Shift Trading Manager, who’s available 24/7 to ensure you’re set up for success.

While a basic level of numeracy is helpful, you don’t need a background in science or maths to succeed here. What matters most is your mindset - how you approach challenges and respond to setbacks.

We also welcome applicants with relevant experience outside of traditional education. If you’re confident, detail-oriented, and driven by curiosity, we want to hear from you. A proactive attitude and a willingness to explore new opportunities within our organisation will set you apart.

You must be able to commit to a shift pattern as part of the role, to support the 24/7 shift trading desk. This placement will also require successful candidates to be based in the Edinburgh office, rather than remotely. This role has the added benefit of extended periods off in between shifts, providing a valuable opportunity to maintain a healthy balance between work, learning, and personal life!
