A rotational graduate scheme
Whilst on the graduate programme, you will rotate across a minimum of three departments within the commercial function. Depending on the role, these placements will last from between 3 and 12 months.
The Operational Trading Desk is responsible for trading, optimising and dispatching our gas-fired power stations. Working a 24/7 shift pattern, the team deliver critical power generation supporting National Grid balance supply and demand as well as ancillary services to provide system stability. The forward trading desk is responsible for hedging the forward financial exposures of the InterGen assets in the power, gas and carbon markets. Rotations through the Trading team will allow you to gain a real-life understanding of how to optimise generation assets as well as practical experience of dispatching these assets and trading in commodity markets.
Within the Trading department a key, function of data gathering, review and evaluation of the prompt and forward trading desks will provide accurate and timely information to support trading strategies. Working alongside a data scientist and our BI team to source data and build models, this role is integral to the success of the trading team.
The Commercial team manage our existing long-term contracts in addition to origination of new opportunities to underpin the profitability of our generation assets. Industry Regulation sits alongside the commercial team responsibilities and requires getting to the heart of regulatory changes across electricity and gas charging areas as well as wider commercial engagement with external stakeholders. You may be asked to support responses to regulatory changes that will affect the operational business as well as managing external communications with regulators, counterparties, government and other public organisations. This rotation will be wide ranging in experience and provide you with varied commercial experience and knowledge of how the UK power and gas markets work and where they are headed.
Other operational based placements may be offered depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidates.
Who we are looking for?
We are looking for two inquisitive people with the enthusiasm to by examine, investigate and review data, to learn about the energy industry and an ability to work within a dynamic setting. You must be able to commit to a shift pattern for up to 12 months as part of the rotation supporting the 24/7 shift trading desk. This placement will also require successful candidates to be based in the Edinburgh office, rather than remotely. This placement also comes with the benefit of periods off between shifts allowing a unique opportunity to balance learning and life balance.
The successful candidates will be an assured, diligent choice maker who demonstrates excellent problem solving skills and enthusiasm to explore new opportunities. Working within a small organisation like InterGen means exposure to a wide variety of areas so you should be adaptable and open to exploring different topics.
Coding/development experience may be advantageous but not essential. All candidates will be expected to complete a rotation on the shift-trading desk but other placements can be tailored towards the successful candidate’s expertise and interests e.g. this may be IT and BI or Commercial, Regulatory or Trading.
Requirements
We are looking for graduates who are educated to degree level, preferably in a scientific or numerical subject but as long as you can demonstrate the right approach and problem solving abilities, we will consider applicants with other relevant experience and degree backgrounds.
